Japanese culinary culture: sushi

This "land of the rising sun", renowned for its culture and economic power, has a strong culinary tradition and many rites associated with eating food. Gastronomy enthusiasts know that Japanese dishes are absolutely unique and very particular. Moreover, Japanese culinary culture has been added to the world heritage list. Among so many other dishes, the one that comes to mind when we talk about "Japanese cuisine" — the best known but also the most typical — is sushi.

The tradition of sushi

It's a Japanese dish par excellence. The tradition of sushi began in Southeast Asia. It was a technique for preserving raw fish. The fish was salted and placed in a container with fermented rice, which stopped the fish from deteriorating. After going through a wave of evolution, these dishes are today made of vinegared rice mixed with different ingredients, depending on the shape and type of the sushi, such as fish, vegetables, but also dried seaweed sheets called Nori. So, sushi can be: maki sushi, nigiri sushi, temaki sushi, and many more.

How to eat them?

We can enjoy them with chopsticks, or directly by hand by grasping them delicately, and they're eaten in a single bite. Depending on the consumer, the sushi can be dipped or not in soy sauce or wasabi — a very spicy Japanese condiment — or both at the same time. It's a real mix of flavours in the mouth. Indeed, sushi, although it does originate from Japan, has become a global dish. Today this delicious dish has become very popular, especially in Western Europe and North America. However, it's always advisable to make sure of the quality of the fish so as not to have any bad surprises.
